#ArtículoLS Inspired by ancestral calendars: the phenological wheel that maps the flowering desert cycle thanks to citizen records 🌺 The Desierto Florido remains a difficult phenomenon to predict. The lack of complete understanding of the factors involved in its cycles motivated the creation of the Phenological Wheel, developed by Josephine Walbaum. This 12-month circular design brings together processes that are usually studied separately: rainfall, temperatures, water accumulation, appearance of species, flowering, pollination, and underground phenomena. 🌸 Inspired by calendars of ancient civilizations, the Wheel gathers scientific information, community observations, local knowledge, and artistic expressions to show how flora and fauna vary over time and what conditions allow it. 💬 Josefina Hepp, director of @fundacionchilco and member of the team, highlighted its value for conservation, by making visible patterns that change year by year in specific places and allowing us to follow how, for example, plants respond to climatic variables. 🌵 Parque Nacional Llanos de Challe was the place chosen to put it to the test:… On the flyer: DESERT WHEELS: Reconstructing the seasonality and dynamics of flowering in Atacama Desert scrub ecosystems
