In 1949, at the height of the Cold War, writer Thomas Mann returns to Germany after sixteen years of exile in the United States and travels the country by car with his daughter Erika, from Frankfurt to Weimar, across a ruined and divided nation. It is a biographical drama by Pawel Pawlikowski about that journey and about the rift within the family itself.
