Building jazz phrases isn't about reinventing the wheel in every bar: it's about learning to connect melodic blocks with meaning and direction. In this video, we review how to articulate a II - V - I towards C Major (Dm7 - G7 - Cmaj7 / C6) based on Barry Harris's concepts of movement and improvisation, thinking of melodic ideas as Lego pieces that are chained together: Base phrase: neighbor tone, arpeggio (ascending tetrad), and descending chromatic scale. Variation: neighbor tone, arpeggio with chromatic approach, and scalar resolution. By understanding how neighbor tones, arpeggios, and chromatics work within functional harmony, you stop relying on the mechanical memory of "licks" and start composing your own lines in real-time on the keyboard. 🎹 Private piano and jazz harmony lessons: Work on vocabulary and bop technique (Barry Harris concepts, bebop scales, movement rules). Harmonic links, voice leading, and repertoire. In-person and online format, adapted to your level and study pace.
